Ethics
The Solution Focused Approach is itself an ethical stance, one that honours client autonomy, avoids assumptions, and trusts people’s capacity to determine what is right for their own lives. Solution Focused practitioners bring their own professional ethics to their work, grounded in the codes and standards of their respective disciplines.
Ethics – In Depth
The Solution Focused Approach and mindset align with the ethical principles and professional standards across many disciplines, including nursing, social work, allied health, psychology, medicine, community work, counselling, education, and organisational practice.
ASFA members practise in accordance with the ethical standards of their own professional discipline. Core virtues include compassion, kindness, dignity, respect, honesty, integrity, and critical thinking. Safety concerns for the client or others are always prioritised and addressed in accordance with established ethical and legal guidelines.
The Solution Focused Approach is guided by four key ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. These are not just abstract ideas they are built into every Solution Focused conversation.
- Autonomy respects the client’s right to identify their own outcome and preferred future. The outcome always belongs to the client.
- Beneficence and non-maleficence ensure focus on safety, wellbeing, and the careful use of respectful language and communication.
- Justice is reflected in offering quality care that is accessible, flexible, and tailored to individual needs and circumstances.
Code of Conduct
- All ASFA members are bound by the ethical Codes of Conduct relevant to their own profession and workplace.
